Our Embassy in Kigali

British Embassy Main Building

The British Embassy Kigali, main Building

The British Embassy in Rwanda opened in 1995.  We cover Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi.  The UK's Ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi is Nicholas Cannon OBE.  The UK has been partnering Rwanda in development since the 1994 genocide.  Today, the UK's support to Rwanda totals £46 million each year, the majority of which is direct budget support to the government towards poverty reduction.  We have committed to the Government of Rwanda to provide at least this level of support until 2016.

The UK's Department for International Development (DFID), which is responsible for managing the UK's development partnership with Rwanda, is located on the same compound as the Embassy.  In January 2008 the British Council opened an office in Rwanda, based at the Muhima Campus of the Rwanda Institute of Administration and Management (RIAM) in Kigali.

In Burundi, we have a small British Embassy Liaison Office based in Bujumbura.  DFID's Burundi office manage the UK's development partnership with Burundi.

The Embassy's core work includes:

Supporting British nationals living in Rwanda and Burundi, through helping British nationals in difficulty and providing a passport service;
Providing a visa service for those wanting to visit the UK;
Working with Rwanda and Burundi towards key British government objectives, such as preventing and resolving conflict, developing effective international institutions, promoting a low carbon economy and countering terrorism and weapons proliferation.

Our normal working hours are 8am to 5pm Mondays to Thursdays, and 8am to 12pm on Fridays.  We have a duty officer on call outside office hours for consular emergencies.  We are located in the Kacyiru area of Kigali, immediately opposite the Novotel Hotel.

We hope you enjoy exploring the rest of our website.
